Step 1: Identify Program and Sub Projects

You have to think and come up with proper program hierarchy structure by considering all possible sub projects within program. The main decision factor of the program structure is how sub projects are related to each other. Sometimes, program plan also have own tasks. In this case, define those tasks in program plan (master project) along with inserted sub projects. Also sometimes, sub projects in program plan may have multiple child projects. (Fig. 2)

Fig 2: Program hierarchy – Three level

In this example, IT System Upgrade Program is the name for program plan and the projects “Invoice system upgrade, Product warranty upgrade and OP systems upgrade” are sub projects within IT System Upgrade Program. This example holds two level program hierarchies.

Tip:

You have to Publish projects in Top-Down approach by using your program structure diagram. Parent plan need to be publish first; and child level plans need to publish within work space of parent.
