MS Project 2010 - Local Cache

  Overview  |      Settings    |   Cleanup    |   Corrupted Cache    |

Local Cache:

Local cache works in background of MS Project Professional 2010 application and it improve the server response time by having minimal interactions between server and Project Professional (all changes are always saved to the cache first and then to the server).

The Local Cache makes it possible to more efficiently transfer data from Microsoft Office Project Professional 2010 to Microsoft Office Project Server 2010 and provides a better offline work experience.

Local Cache Functionality:

Whenever you open or save projects that are on Project Server 2010, the operations go through the local project cache.

  • User opens a project for the first time; Project will be cached in local cache folder on your hard drive
  • User opens the project for the second time. Project will be opened from the cache; Project changes (if any changes done by other PM) are downloaded from Project Server
  • User edit/saves the project, system will saves the entire project on your hard drive, but saves only those recent changes to the server

When you save a project in the project server, you can see the status of the local cache's spooling operation on the status bar at bottom of Project plan. When the spooling operation is done, you can see the message on status bar as "Save Job completed successfully".

By default, Project Server 2010 stores the local cache in the following folder on your machine.

C:\Users\userid\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\MS Project\14\Cache

Example: If your userid is ctukkadi, so in that case the local cache folder will be located in the following folder:

C:\Users\ctukkadi\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\MS Project\14\Cache
