If you already created the consolidated/master project, it’s easy to manage the dependencies among projects through master project.
Steps:
- Open Master Project
- Click on View menu -> Gantt chart
- Select the tasks that you want to link
(To select non adjacent tasks, press and hold down Cntrl key as you click each task name)
- Edit menu -> Link Task (or use the standard tool bar, click on “Link Tasks” button)
Example:
I have a task called “Create deployment script” on MS Project Server Deployment. I want to link this task to another task in the project called MS Project Client Deployment. The task in the MS Client Deployment is called “Install and run the Office 2003 Resource Kit”.
The task “Create deployment script” should start after finishing the task “Install and run the Office 2003 Resource Kit”. Here we are defining the Finish-Start dependency between the tasks from two different projects.
Steps:
- Open the consolidated Project (Master Project)
- Select the task “Install and run the Office 2003 Resource Kit” on MS Project Client Deployment
- Press and hold down Cntrl key, and select the task “Create deployment script” on MS Project Server Deployment
- Edit menu -> Link Task
- Please verify Predecessor column content for task “Create deployment script”; you will see the predecessor information in this format: <>\MS Project Client Deployment.Published\145; where 145 is task id of the Install and run the Office 2003 Resource Kit
- Please verify successor column content for task “Install and run the Office 2003 Resource Kit”; you will see the successor information in this format: <>\MS Project Server Deployment.Published\273; where 273 is task id of the Create deployment script
- Save Master Project (Save to local computer)
- Once you done with updates/establishing the links on master, click on File menu -> Close
- You will get the following prompt for every inserted project
- Click Yes for RW projects; Click No for Read-only projects
